The Best Time for Newborn Portraits | Frederick Maryland Newborn Photographer | Katie Ballantine Photography
Newborns are only tiny for a short time, so having your newborn portraits early on is important. Today on the blog, I write about the best time for those newborn sessios.
The Best Age to Photograph Newborns
It’s true what they say… “babies don’t keep.” This is especially true of the newborn stage. Your little bundle of joy will only be in the newborn stage for a very short time, and I want to capture those memories for you. I recommend babies come in for their newborn session before they reach 2 weeks old.
When babies are under 2 weeks, they are still sleepy and snuggly and easy to calm. Once babies are a little older, they are much more aware of their surroundings and move around much more, which can make photographs a little trickier.
That being said, even if you missed out on those fresh newborn portraits, I still recommend bringing your baby in as soon as you can. Since I do not pose babies in elaborate positions, it is not necessary for them to sleep through their entire sessions. Older babies can be wrapped in my stretch wraps for some very cute images while wide awake.
When To Book Your Newborn Session
Now that you know you should try to have your baby in the studio before 3 weeks of age, we should talk about when to actually book that session! I always recommend getting on my calendar BEFORE baby arrives! Contact me when you are in the 3rd trimester to get on my schedule for the month you are due. Once baby comes, we’ll pick an exact date that works best for you.
I also take maternity pictures, so if you’re interested in information about those, check my my blog post about when to schedule maternity pictures:

I look forward to meeting you and your little one!
