Both in-home and studio newborn portraits can be beautifully lit when Mother Nature brings us the perfect weather. But, what happens when there are clouds, rain, or storms on your scheduled newborn session day??

How I Beat the Dark Days on Newborn Session Days

Thankfully, even on dark and rainy days, I am able to produce beautifully lit and cheerful images.

I have spent years perfecting my style, and one of the tools I have learned to use over the years is strobe lighting. Now, you may think you know what studio light looks like…. harsh, fake, lots of shadows… Well, have no fear. I use studio light just like window light!

I can bring along my strobe light to home sessions or use it in my studio on days that the sun isn’t giving me quite the right light.

My last newborn client captured me in action using the strobe light, and I was so excited to see this image! Here is a little behind the scenes. I use the strobe light right by the window to act as my light source.

The strobe light is also great for freezing motion when you have squirmy toddlers.
