One Year Cake Smash | Frederick MD Baby Photographer | Katie Ballantine Photography
Can My Baby Do A Cake Smash During A Session? Cake smashes are a wonderful addition to a one-year-old birthday session. The first birthday is such a perfect milestone to document. I start out these sessions in the studio or outdoors with portraits of the baby alone in special outfits brought my parents. After the portraits of baby, I move onto pictures of the one year old with family members. I capture them snuggling, playing, interacting, and take some casually posed images. But the end… that’s when the real fun begins. Parents are more than welcome to bring along a small cake for a smash at the end. Some one…

The Best Time for Newborn Portraits | Frederick Maryland Newborn Photographer | Katie Ballantine Photography
Newborns are only tiny for a short time, so having your newborn portraits early on is important. Today on the blog, I write about the best time for those newborn sessios. The Best Age to Photograph Newborns It’s true what they say… “babies don’t keep.” This is especially true of the newborn stage. Your little bundle of joy will only be in the newborn stage for a very short time, and I want to capture those memories for you. I recommend babies come in for their newborn session before they reach 2 weeks old. When babies are under 2 weeks, they are still sleepy and snuggly and easy to calm.…

Newborn Portraits | Frederick Maryland Newborn Photographer | Katie Ballantine Photography
Newborn photography has a special place in my heart. New babies are so sweet and so tiny, but they don’t stay in the newborn stage very long! When Should I Schedule My Baby’s Newborn Portraits? Newborn portraits are typically done before the baby is 3 weeks old. The sweet spot is 3 days to 10 days old. So, if you know you are going to want newborn portraits taken, get on my schedule before baby arrives. We can always alter the date later if baby comes early or late, but for scheduling purposes, I like to know how many newborns I need to leave room for in my schedule. If…

What if My Baby Won’t Sleep for His/Her Newborn Session? | Frederick Newborn Photographer | Katie Ballantine Photography
There’s often a lot of anxiety from parents when they are booking a newborn session because they wonder what will happen if their baby doesn’t sleep. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s O.K.! If Baby Won’t Sleep The first thing I want parents to know when they ask me what will happen if their little bundle of joy has zero interest in sleeping is… That’s completely fine! My approach to photography is very stress-free and relaxed. I do not pose babies in ways that require them to be super sleepy. There has been a trend in newborn photography to do intricate poses on babies, and to do this,…

What is an Organic Maternity Session?
Organic maternity sessions in the all white studio are so beautiful. These sessions are called organic because they use neutral colors, natural posing and are shot on timeless beautiful film. What Should I Wear ? I recommend mamas wear something comfortable and neutral. Pregnant mamas are already glowing, and I want to capture that natural glow and beauty that comes out when you wear light, organic colors. Whites, creams, light grey, tan, and light peach are all wonderful colors for pregnant mamas. Can my other children come? Yes! I take pictures on my studio bed, in the window, and other casual areas where your other little ones can…

How I’m Keeping the Studio Safe | Frederick Maryland Newborn Photographer | Katie Ballantine Photography
COVID-19 is here and certainly creating concerns in all areas of life these days. Running a safe studio has always been a top priority of mine, and it’s even more important now that a new virus is here changing our lives. Here are just a few ways I’m working to keep myself and my clients safe. Vaccinated I believe the best way I can keep myself, my family, and my wonderful clients safe is to be vaccinated against diseases. I get all of my vaccines and am also vaccinated against COVID-19. Data is showing that vaccinated individuals do not pass the virus onto others. Vaccinated people also do not need…
