Sibling Shots at a Newborn Session
Parents are often worried about how we will accomplish sibling shots during newborn shoots; especially with toddlers! Today on the blog, I’m writing about some tricks and sibling shot options for newborn sessions. Are Sibling Shots Included? Yes! I always include parent and sibling shots in my newborn sessions. I think it’s really important to document the entire family during this time, and especially document the relationship between family members and the new baby. My Toddler is Too Little To Hold the Baby Alone Many times, the newborns in my studio have older siblings that are still babies themselves. I still love to document these siblings with the new baby.…

All About Studio Milestones
How Long Are They? Studio Milestones are typically my shortest sessions. Believe it or not, I can get a variety of gorgeous pictures in just 15-20 minutes. This is great for the kids and also the parents. Babies and kids are typically “over it” after 20-30 minutes of a photo session, which is totally ok! However; sometimes babies and kids need some extra time to warm up to the idea of pictures, so we’ll take as much time as needed. All of the images in this blog post were captured in a TEN MINUTE TIME SLOT. Are There Backdrops? Studio sessions are a great way to get shots of your…

First Birthday Cake Smash | Frederick Maryland Baby Photographer | Katie Ballantine Photography
Cake Smash at Home First birthday sessions that end with a cake smash are always so fun! Parents have the option of doing a portrait session either in my studio or in their own home and then bringing a small cake for a smash at the end. Today on the blog is an in-home documentary session of my adorable niece’s 1st birthday cake smash. Having the session at home instead of in my studio allows for the parents to decorate with lots of personal touches and bring their personality to the session. I love the garden theme of this cake smash session. Everything is just darling, and baby Claire LOVED…

In-Home vs. Studio Newborn Sessions
At Katie Ballantine Photography, I offer both in-home newborn sessions and studio newborn sessions. Today, I’ll be writing about the difference between these two newborn portrait options. In-Home Sessions Many families love the idea of staying in the comfort of their own home for a newborn portrait session. In-home sessions are very lifestyle and documentary in nature. This means, instead of setting a small studio in your home, I’ll use areas around the house to take the pictures. Some of my favorite spots in people’s homes include the master bedroom bed, the nursery, the family room, and anywhere with big windows and lots of light. The pictures that come from…

Why You Need An Album
A Digital World In today’s world, everything is in digital format. We can go to work and school virtually, shop online, join clubs and follow friends and family on social media. It certainly is a digital world we live in. So then, why do we need a physical photo album if everything is accessible online? Tangible Albums Even though my clients are able to purchase digital files alone, I always recommend they purchase a deluxe book or album of their session’s portraits (which come with the digital files as backup). The albums allow you and your children to look through the images in the most beautiful way. A photo in…

Why Get Milestone Portraits?
“Babies don’t keep”… it’s true what they say! Newborns and babies change so quickly the first year. After the newborn session, I always recommend parents sign up for some milestone sessions. This way, the different stages are documented. Milestone Sessions Milestone sessions can be ages 3 month, sitting up (around 7 months) , and 1 year. Babies at 3 months are smiling, around 7 months are sitting up and laughing, and at one year are standing or walking! There are so many big milestones to capture! Be sure to schedule a milestone session soon! Even if you missed the newborn pictures, it’s not too late to start documenting!
